Farnham
Cadets Support Army Benevolent Fund |
|
  In
a mammoth effort to help the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF)
cadets from Farnham Detachment raised a total of £1044
through a collection at Sainsbury's Store in Farnham. The
Army Benevolent Fund is the Army’s national charity. For
over sixty years the charity has worked tirelessly to
provide financial and practical support to soldiers,
former soldiers and their families in times of need.
With
the British Army high in the headlines of the national
news undertaking difficult and dangerous tasks in hostile
areas around the world, the people of Farnham demonstrated
their support by their generous donations to the ABF.
The
cadets and instructors of Farnham Detachment are to be
congratulated for their highly public spirited work in

Royal Maundy, Guildford Cathedral, 13 April 2006 |
|
The
Queen visited Guildford
Cathedral on Maundy Thursday, 13th April 2006 for the
Traditional Annual Distribution of Maundy Money. The Royal
Maundy is an ancient ceremony that has its origins in the
fourth century. The service, always held on Maundy
Thursday, but at a different venue each year, honours
Christ's command to his disciples at the Last Supper to
'love one another'. The Maundy Money recognises the
locals' contribution to the Church and the local
community. As the number of recipients matches the age of
The Queen in any given year, 80 men and 80 women received
the Maundy money this year.
The
earliest Monarch known to have taken part in a Maundy
service is King John at Knaresborough in Yorkshire in
1210. By the Tudor period the Sovereign had become
actively associated with the Maundy ceremony, giving rise
to the term Royal Maundy.
The
service was traditionally held in Westminster Abbey every
year until the current Queen's reign, when Her Majesty
decided that the service should change location each year
to ensure that people across the country could benefit
from the Royal Maundy service.
Surrey
ACF was invited to send a contingent of cadets to assist
at the Cathedral with various tasks during the day. Being
such a prestigious event, cadets from Guildford, Merrow, Haslemere
and Cranleigh detachment met at Farncombe Weekend Training
Centre on Wednesday 12 April to participate in rehearsals,
to practice their drill and to prepare their kit for the
following day.
On
13 April, reveille was at 0600 hrs and by 0800 hrs all the
cadets were on the ground at Guildford Cathedral. The
cadets were split into two parties. One party of 12 cadets
and 2 officers was tasked to assist inside the
cathedral. The other party of eight cadets and three
adults was tasked to assist in the car parks, to help
members of the public and to form a
guard of honour for Her Majesty in front of the Cathedral
on her arrival and departure. Two instructors also
provided assistance to the general public by running a
minibus shuttle service to and from the cathedral and car
parks. The Surrey Army Cadets outside the Cathedral worked
alongside regular soldiers from the 2nd Battalion The
Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment and units of the Sea
Cadet Corps, the Air Training Corps and St John's
Ambulance Brigade.
The
photograph above shows the whole contingent of Surrey ACF cadets who
assisted at the Royal Maundy ceremony at Guildford
cathedral. The picture on the right shows the contingent
that assisted inside the cathedral. The guys in fancy
dress are gentlemen of 'The Queen's Bodyguard of the
Yeoman of the Guard'. The Bodyguard is the oldest military
corps in existence. Originally they were entirely
responsible for the Sovereign's safety in the Field and in
the Palace - they still search the vaults of the Houses of
Parliament before each State Opening. Over the years the
uniform of the Bodyguard has changed very little and their
title remains unchanged.

Potential
Officers Feel The Heat |
|
Over
the weekend of 3rd to 5th March 2006, nineteen ACF
NCOs subjected themselves to a battery of
tests, interviews, discussion groups and physical
activities designed to assess their aptitude to
become Commissioned Officers. The Potential
Officer candidates came from Kent, Sussex and
Surrey ACFs and were put through their paces at
the Surrey ACF Weekend Training Centre at
Farncombe, near Godalming. The Board President was
Colonel John Baber, Commandant of Sussex ACF, who
commented, "The calibre of the candidates who
presented themselves for assessment was very high.
They demonstrated great stamina and enthusiasm
remaining cheerful and committed throughout the
course of the weekend."
The
Army Cadet Force sends its Potential Officers to
the Cadet Force Commissioning Board at Westbury
for testing and evaluation over a weekend of
physically and mentally arduous examination.
Officer selection is designed to identify those candidates
who have the qualities and personality to be able
to lead and command within the Army Cadet
Force. The Potential Officers weekend
assessment course, of which this is the first for
Kent, Sussex and Surrey, allows candidates to feel
the pressure of selection before committing to the
real thing.
The
weekend started with small group discussions that
tested the candidates' knowledge of current
affairs and ability to construct well reasoned
arguments. Their leadership skills were tested by
a variety of command task exercises in which small
groups were given seemingly impossible missions to
complete using makeshift equipment. Personality
tests and a complicated planning exercise put the candidates
under intense scrutiny. The weekend was
finished off with one to one interviews in which
the candidates were grilled about their motives
and aspirations in wanting to be appointed as an
officer.
"I
was very nervous about coming on the selection
weekend having never done anything like this
before. I was pleased with my performance and am
now more enthusiastic than ever to have a crack at
Westbury," commented SI Tanya Waddington
from Surrey ACF. To
qualify to attend the Cadet Force Commissioning
Board candidates must convince their Headquarters
that they have the qualities necessary to pass the
gruelling assessment, they must have completed an
Adult Instructors Course at the Cadet Training
Centre at Frimley Park and have attended at least
one annual camp. Attendance at a Potential
Officers training weekend will probably also
become a prerequisite. |

Lord Lieutenant Opens New
ACF Centre at Leatherhead |
|
The
Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, Mrs Sarah Goad, opened the new
Surrey Army Cadet Force Centre in Oaks Close, Leatherhead on
Thursday the 19th January
2006.
After
two years of parading in temporary accommodation, the
purpose-built Unit now boasts a two-storey Cadet Training
Centre with dedicated classrooms, drill hall, kitchen,
stores, two offices and a parade ground.
The
Detachment Commander, Sergeant Thomas Brown, said;
“It’s fantastic having such a modern unit for our
Cadets. We now have over 20 cadets, girls and boys aged
between 12 and 18 years, who have excellent facilities to
work towards their Army Proficiency Certificates and gain
their ‘star’ badges.”
One
of these, Cadet Ben Hunt, 14, who attends Howard of
Effingham school said;” I joined the Army Cadet Force 13
months ago and have been away on lots of ACF weekends
including field training exercises, first aid training and
general military skills. The best, though, was the two
week Annual Camp at an Army Training Camp, near Thetford
in Norfolk where I went on a three day exercise, practised
my marksmanship skills on the ranges and took part in
kayaking and abseiling.
“It
was really cool meeting lots of other Cadets of my age
from across Surrey and I soon realised how useful the
training given at my unit was in preparing me for the
field exercises in particular. I like these most of all
because it brings together all the skills learnt as well
as throwing up unexpected challenges. Best of all is
sleeping out under a “basha” in a tactical harbour
area. I have become much more self reliant and confident
in myself and really recommend that others of my age give
the Army Cadets a go.” Ben’s mum, Angela, commented,
“I am so pleased Ben’s channelling his energies in
such a way and I never thought I would see him iron his
own shirts etc – with perfect creases, of course!”
The
Army Cadet Centre, Oaks Close, Leatherhead is open between
1930 – 2130 hrs on a Monday & Thursday (ask for
Sergeant Brown). For more information about the ACF
contact the Surrey Headquarters on 01483 425371.

Merrow Detachment Opens New ACF
Centre |
|
Cadets
parading at Merrow Detachment, situated in the grounds of
St Peter’s School in Merrow, have now moved into their
new-look cadet centre. The Mayor of Guildford, Councillor
Tamsy Baker, officially opened the newly refurbished
building at a special buffet and wine reception. It was
the first time the cadets had been inside their new
detachment after eight weeks of renovation.
Joining
the cadets on the official opening night were many other
local dignitaries and senior representatives of Surrey ACF
including the Battalion Commander, Major David Newman as
well as the Head Teacher of St Peter’s School Mr Robert
Guinea. The MP for Guilford Mrs Ann Milton and parents of
cadets were also be in attendance.
“We
are thoroughly pleased to be coming home to our own
detachment,” said Detachment Commander Under-Officer
Adrian Paice. “For the past two months, my cadets have
been parading at Guildford Detachment and I would
like to thank the Detachment Commander Under-Officer
Graham Croucher for making us all so welcome there during
that time."
To
celebrate their return, a special tournament was laid on
where the cadets competed against each other in two teams
to erect 12’ x 12’ tents in the quickest time – lots
of practising had been taking place and friendly rivalry
was in abundance!
Surrey
ACF has 26 Army Cadet detachments across the county and
the Merrow detachment was refurbished from money provided
by the British Army. The Detachment parades each Tuesday
and Thursday evening between 1930hrs and 2130hrs.
